Every day is a blessing.
But we make them blessed by the choices we make.
What choices have you made recently that improved your life?
Earlier this week, I was visiting a friend and noticed five ribbons on her Christmas tree. She had been telling me about her tree decorating experience back when she and her husband were first married. As newly weds they were reluctant to spend money on a Christmas tree, but a dear friend brought them a small tree, and together with their friends, they began the process of adding decorations. Little trinkets from around their home, some white paper snowflakes cut from typing paper, and paper chains made small and petite to fit on their small Christmas tree.
As they finished, their friend brought out a length of red ribbon and began to cut it into short strips, carefully tying each one into a bow. As he finished cutting and tying the bows, he shared a long tradition.
Each year, as we decorate our tree, each member of our family makes five bows. For each bow, we name a person who has made a difference in our lives during the past year. Either by encouraging us, motivating us, or just enriching our lives by being a part of our year, these people are remembered for their presence in our year.
He handed each of us five ribbons, and we took the time to write each of them down and share how they had influenced our lives during the past year. Our tradition was started. I continued the tradition.
Every year, as I meet with clients, I’m reminded of my own tradition and make an effort to enrich their lives. I want to be a person who makes a difference for others.
